CONTRACT EXPLORATION SURVEYS
OIL AND GAS

Petro-Find Geochem Ltd offers geochemical contract services to oil and natural gas companies exploring for hydrocarbons in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and elsewhere. Petro-Find is one of the few geochemical companies that explores for both oil/gas and biogenic dry gas. Based in Saskatoon, the company is well placed to serve this industry.

To obtain consistent and repeatable results, analysis is performed in Petro-Find's own lab within a week after samples are taken. The quick turn-around allows completion of projects to the client's satisfaction before de-mobilization and movement to another contract area.

PRINCIPAL APPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS

In general, the basic approach to any exploration program is to use methods that provide the maximum information at the lowest cost possible. Accordingly, a reconnaissance survey on one-mile centers should be conducted first to assess the oil and gas potential of an area. Once the anomalous trends for Methane (for gas) and Ethane+ (for oil) are established, higher density surveys should be conducted to further define the aerial extent and configuration of the anomalies. High-density surveys (400-meter spacing or less) coupled with seismic confirmation of structure provides a firm basis for a drilling decision.

Petro-Find technology is applicable at all stages of the exploration cycle including: land acquisition, pre- and post-seismic evaluation, pinpointing targets, extending discovered reservoirs, assessing mature reservoirs for bypassed compartments or missed hydrocarbon zones, and assessing the efficiency of secondary recovery techniques. sampling rudy willick

The Petro-Find system is a powerful reconnaissance tool to identify anomalous areas in virgin territories where little drilling has been done. Basin studies are important in guiding future exploration programs in the medium- and long-term. Its mobility makes it an ideal survey method to ascertain anomalies and level of interest in environmentally restricted areas, federal lands and First Nation Reservations.

Petro-Find technology finds major application for detailed surveys, which pinpoint drilling targets. It is used in conjunction with seismic geophysics in most exploration programs. The detailed surveys can rate drill prospects with highest potential first while eliminating prospects with weak or no anomalies. This approach increases the probability of success in wildcat and development drilling as well as finding bypassed compartments or missed hydrocarbon zones in mature reservoirs.

Detailed surveys also are most useful for assessing the efficiency of secondary recovery operations. The surface expression assists the operator to increase the level of production more efficiently.

The Petro-Find system is very useful for pre- and post-seismic evaluation of potential areas. It is generally applied prior to seismic surveys because of its relatively low cost and the ruling out areas of little interest. As seismic surveys are very expensive, the explorationist will want to determine where his seismic dollars would be best spent. Petro-Find sampling with probe and syringe

The Petro-Find system is a very useful tool for lease acquisition and land management. It is an inexpensive way to evaluate large blocks by widely spaced sampling points prior to acquiring leases. This can be easily and quickly done along public roads and right-of-ways to keep a company's intentions secret from competitors. This approach is especially useful in acquiring leases along producing trends. The pruning of leaseholds with no potential can be a major cost saving.

Petro-Find technology finds traps that are invisible to seismic. For most types of structural traps it would be used in conjunction with seismic surveys, either before or afterwards, to identify drilling targets. However, the Petro-Find system is the only feasible exploration method for finding some stratigraphic traps, which are difficult to locate with seismic methods alone. While seismic technology is an excellent tool for finding structural traps, it may be found that the traps contain little or no hydrocarbons when drilled. Even some structural traps are difficult to identify with seismic such as complex pools created by thrust faulting, as well as reservoirs inclined at sharp angles or tightly folded.
